What the Organization Offers

Southern Christian Leadership Conference was a result of the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. On 1957 in Atlanta, Georgia, sixty people from ten states formed Southern Leadership Conference on Transportation and Nonviolent Integration. February 14, 1957 became the official day of the organization and its’ was shortened to the current name (SCLC). SCLC supports civil rights and rejects segregation.

Today the organization is nationwide and its’ members from a variety race, religion, and background. SCLC’s initiatives consist of voter education, conflict resolution, economic empowerment, health care, youth development, and collegiate chapter development.

Impact on People

Hurricane Katrina left those in the poorer sections in the Delta region of Louisiana without medical supplies and medications. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference acquired over $200,000 in the form of food, water, clothing, toiletries, and in-kind donations for the Katrina survivors.

Other Facts

The SCLC founders were Martin Luther King, Jr. and  Dr. Ralph David Abernathy. This movement’s cornerstone is the use of nonviolent action.
SCLC has spoken out against the racial profiling of Muslims and Arabs due to past anti-terrorism legislation.
