What the Company Offers
For over sixty years, Heifer has donated animals to impoverished families in 128 countries. Heifer teaches these families in better farming methods. Cattlemen across the nation share the offspring of their animals to the organization. Heifer’s goal is to end hunger and poverty through providing long term relief. When a person receives an animal from Heifer, they are to keep “passing on the gift” by giving an offspring from their animal to another person.
Heifer’s principles: passing the gift, accountability, sharing and caring, sustainability and reliance, improved animal management, gender and family focus, genuine need and justice, improving the environment, full participation, training and education, and spirituality.
Impact On People
Christine in Rwanda received a cow from Heifer. She sells the milk to people in her village. This milk improved the health of her family. She donated her offspring from her cow to a neighbor. Heifer has taught her and her village farm management techniques while raising their cattle.
Antonio in Guatemala uses his cattle’s manure to help grow his organic coffee bean plants. He is apart of the Fair Trade grower. The coffee plants are his main source of income. Heifer supports Fair Trade products through the Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.
Other Facts
The first shipment of cattle left in 1944 to Puerto Rico. For the first time, malnourished children had the opportunity to taste milk.
Heifer was awarded the 2006 Fast Company/Monitor Group Social Capitalist Award.
A documentary on Heifer International was aired on PBS. Proceeds from the sale of the tape are directly given to Heifer. For tape information contact call: 1-800-696-1918.
