Lately I have found that I have little to no knowledge of the Old Testament. I have read through the books of the Old Testament but have no idea about the history behind the writings, the customs, etc. I have been wanting to learn more about the times and people so was pleased to see this book on my desk for review. It is a thicker book so can take a bit more time to chew on. The style in which it was written is not too advanced and academic but it is written on a more scholarly level. I feel that the editors have done an excellent job in exploring the Old Testament offering a solid foundation of study for history. Designed to be used as a textbook for college and seminary students this book offers an in depth study of the Old Testament, providing all of the background needed to learn more about the times, people, and customs. This is a very well written study and one that will give you insight in to the five eras of Israel 's history through a careful compilation of Eugene H. Merrill's essays and studies. I believe this to be a great introductory course for Old Testament studies. It is perfect for the Bible student or seminary student and will give them a solid background in Old Testament studies.
