The Corbans
Interview Courtesy of 1340mag

The following is an email interview with future Christian music legends The Corbans. The Corbans are on Micah Media. The Corbans have a style similar to Plankeye, Everybodyduck, Blink 182 , etc, etc. The Corbans have great lyrics - if you’ve got questions, they’ve got the answer (or can point you to it). Your mission - should you choose to accept- is to read this entire interview and think upon the questions and answers. This message will self - destruct in 5 seconds (so read fast!)

1340mag: Tell me how you came to be a Micah Records band and ceased to be an Organic Records band.

Corbans: We left Organic Records almost two years ago, due to certain events that occurred during our time with them. At that point, we were touring and writing music without a label and recorded our new album. On the road, we met Dave Lula who was working for another company and developed a relationship with him that continued throughout these past two years. Dave had heard that we had left Organic and contacted us stating that he was now working with Micah and that they were interested in talking with us about a label deal. That's where we are today-- That's the short and sweet version of what happened.

1340mag: What is a "corban"?

Corbans: Corban is a Hebrew word that means "offering"--we took the word from its original Hebrew text and gave it a little English letter change to make it "Corban", then added the plural for the band.

1340mag: A lot of the songs on your new album deal with man's stubborness. For example, in the song "Everything to Owe" you talk about being "to proud" to humble yourself before God and ask him in to your heart, like you would have to admit that you screwed up (which is extremely hard to do sometimes). Have you ever felt that a kid walked away from your show without getting his life right with God because of this? What do you do in a situation like that?

Corbans: I'm sure there have been situations where people have left our show knowing the reality of what they need to do--and that's repent and give complete control to Christ. Instead, they leave with a hard heart and are content with continuing to live their lives in bondage to sin. In those circumstances, all we can do is pray and ask God's spirit to convict those individuals. God has allowed the band to sing and talk about His salvation, and we use every opportunity to do so with every show.

1340mag: Is there a particular incident that spawned the lyrics to "Everything to Owe"?

Corbans: This entire album has come from a mix of my own feelings and emotions at certain times of my life, along with close friends I know who have yet to give "complete control" to Christ. This particular song was written with those friends in mind.

1340mag: What's your favorite song on the new record and why?

Corbans: My favorite song is "Headlight". That's a song that deals with my feelings and circumstances for the past few years. I find that many of the songs I write end up being great advice for me. I really need work on patience and letting God complete his work in me, and in His time! I need to be concerned with being obedient to God's will and not necessarily spending so much time thinking about God's will for my life.

1340mag: A lot of Christian bands have been breaking into the "mainstream" market recently (like Sixpence None The Richer and P.O.D.), Do you think that people are more open to God, and spiritual things in general, than they were 10 years ago?

Corbans: I think this generation is looking for truth, and they want those in the popular eye to share that truth with them, honestly and sincerely. I also believe that people are looking for something "more" in this life, and that leads to a spiritual realm. Unfortunately, many people look in other directions for peace and for significance that can only be found through Christ. Our youth is hungry for the truth and for a sign that they are loved unconditionally. I think that it's a great opportunity for bands to break into the secular mainstream, but they need to be careful to not let down their guard and compromise the Gospel. What a wonderful opportunity to share the Word of God and his salvation to a hurting, aching people. I truly believe that God will bless those bands that stand up for the Gospel of Christ and preach His word boldly, especially in the secular mainstream. That market needs to hear God's message, and we need to be willing to use that opportunity to sing about it.

1340mag: Do you feel that its important for a band to share the gospel from the stage? Is it any different for christian bands that are popular outside the christian market?

Corbans: Personally, I think it is a privilege to be able to share God's word on the stage.I don't believe that it should be any different from the other circumstances that surround our lives. Christ commanded us to make disciples of all men and to preach His word boldly to all. We need to be living in obedience to Christ on the stage and off the stage, and letting people know the joy that we have. Some bands feel that the stage is not the place for Christ to be mentioned. Why shouldn't it? Are we ashamed of telling others about Christ on stage and letting them know the difference He's made in our lives? Absolutely, not. That's my opinion. Christ has made a difference in my life, and that's what I sing about. That's what I'm going to talk about from that platform.

1340mag: In the CD booklet it says that you wear and endorse Never Say Die Streetwear. Care to make a plug?

Corbans: They're a great Christian clothing company that makes great product. We love to wear their clothes and we tell people to support what their ministry. Check them out at http://www.neversaydie.com

1340mag: What's your favorite C.S.Lewis book and why?

Corbans: Too many to name! Mere Christianity has been a favorite of mine these past two years. I've used it for debate and witnessing to many friends who don't know Christ and like to argue that no God exits. Hence, leading to many themes of the songs off of the new album.

1340mag: Will you be touring for this record?

Corbans: Yes, we plan on starting a long tour in May, and are coming to a town near you!

1340mag: Parting Thoughts?

Corbans: Keep Christ your focus, your first love, and your one desire. Let Him work out His plan in your life. Our prayers our with all of you!
